TORONTO, Ont. – 5 SEPTEMBER, 2017 –Toronto Inner-City Rugby Foundation (TIRF) is proud to support 10 phenomenal student athletes on their post-secondary journey. Inspired by the dedication and commitment of student athletes, TIRF offers post-secondary scholarships to rugby players, and those who help support their high-school/post-secondary/club rugby teams.
“We want young athletes to become the very best version of themselves,” said Ige Egal, executive director of Toronto Inner-City Rugby Foundation. “As a relatively young sport for development organization, TIRF is committed to supporting young people play rugby and provide academic or employment support beyond rugby. This year we had an overwhelming response for applications resulting in the largest number of TIRF Scholars we’ve awarded.”
TIRF, in partnership with the Doncaster Foundation, the Webb Family and Eventi Capital Partners, has been awarding scholarships since 2014. TIRF Scholars have been deserving rugby players that reside in Toronto’s Neighbourhood improvement areas (NIA), are affiliated with a TIRF school, play for a Toronto Club or volunteer/work to support TIRF. Scholarships were awarded based on a demonstration of financial need; performance (both athletic and academic), and community service.
Over the past three-years, more than $169,000 has been committed to help remove financial barriers and assist outstanding TIRF participants in achieving their post-secondary aspirations. The scholarship helps produce outstanding leaders willing to give back to their local communities through the development of rugby and other social initiatives.
Applications for scholarship candidates are accepted from April to May through the website: https://tirfrugby.ca/beyond-rugby/scholarship-program/.
