Last month, international rugby made an exciting return to Toronto’s newly renovated BMO Field. On June 26th, amidst 30-degree heat, Canada’s senior men took on Italy in front of over 13,000 spectators. TIRF was able to provide 150 free and discounted tickets to its registered players, as well as those involved in TIRF’s Rookie Rugby program at various schools and community groups across the GTA. Full advantage was taken of the opportunity to engage with the rugby communities of Southern Ontario as TIRF put on a pre-match social that included giving away free food and t-shirts.
Canadian kicker and scrumhalf Gordon McRorie kept his side in the game by the skill of his boot. By the 40-minute mark, both teams went to the dressing room neck and neck with 9 points each. TIRF’s day culminated with the organization of three flag rugby games at half time, which saw junior players from Balmy Beach, Oakville, Barrie, Nomads, TIRF and Toronto City RFC take to the field to show off their skills.
Despite an electric atmosphere and home field advantage, the Canadians fell by a narrow margin of 2 points after Italy crossed over for a try late in the game. McRorie kicked 6 from 6 on the day, scoring all of Canada’s points in a 20-18 defeat.
Fortunately, the large presence of TIRF players at the day’s events indicates a bright future for the game in Toronto, and Canada as a whole. To stay updated on TIRF news and events, follow us on social media at https://www.facebook.com/tirfrugby and https://twitter.com/tirfrugby
